The 2011-12 biennium Zonta Club of Hilo issued a call for project proposals and several have been received. Our Service Committee is evaluating the options and will seek membership input at the November meeting. The 2010-11 biennium Zonta Club of Hilo returned to the Neighborhood Place of Puna for its Weinberg Friends service project. The Neighborhood Place of Puna focuses on the well-being of families and the prevention of child abuse and neglect in the Puna community. NPP is a neighborly place that serves as a hub for joint efforts and collaboration. In April 2011, 25 Zontians and a few friends helped Neighborhood Place of Puna mauka office and garden off Kulani Road. We cleaned, dug, planted and assembled bygience packs. In December 2010 25 Zontians did hands on cleanup, repair and gardening and assembling hygiene packs for fifty moms at the Pahoa facility of NPP. The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation committed to a $10,000 grant to NPP if Zonta meets its 25-member goal for the workday. The Rose Committee continues maintaining the garden at Hilo Medical Center and the Hands Are Not for Hitting Program continues.
The 2008-09 biennium Zonta Club of Hilo adopted Hale Ohana, the domestic abuse
shelter on the East Side of Hawaii Island, for a two-year
concentration of service. We purchased sturdy wooden dining chairs and collected toiletries and household items for the shelter. We made
"Restart" kits that contain a few basics, like dishes and flatware, for
families faced with beginning again from scratch. We did a 'hands-on' work project in both 2008 and 2009 which earned the facility two $10,000 Weinberg grants. During the '08-09 biennium we continued the “Hands Are Not for Hitting” project in preschools. Also in 2008 we did an "Adopt a Rural School Project: Sawfar" to help supply children in Lebanon with learning tools.
